A category is not an individual tooth identifier

Primary means baby teeth. Mixed dentition describes a mixture of primary and permanent teeth.

In a written description, primary or permanent is category information. The clinician's own identification tells you which tooth the note concerns. Retain that supplied wording when retelling it; a generic symbol on this page is not a numbering chart.

For example, the fictional phrase 'the permanent tooth identified in the plan' supplies a category and points to another part of the document for identity. It does not supply a tooth number here. The accurate reading preserves both facts instead of guessing the missing identifier.

The action word tells you what the sentence proposes

Different words name different objects

A conceptual word map separates the scope of the action. Read the labels; do not match the symbols to your own teeth.

The whole object is named

Tooth removal

  • A tooth
  • Its identity comes from the supplied plan

A different part is named

Interproximal reduction

  • Limited enamel between teeth
  • Its locations come from the supplied plan
Original symbols for language learning. They are not anatomical views, treatment instructions or before-and-after results.

Extraction means tooth removal. Interproximal reduction removes a small amount of enamel between teeth to reduce their width.

These definitions let you distinguish the named actions. They do not tell you which action is appropriate. Notice the object of the verb: a tooth in one description, and limited enamel between teeth in the other. A note that uses one action should not be paraphrased as the other.

Two notes, read without changing their meaning

The following sentences are invented solely for reading practice. They deliberately omit tooth numbers and treatment instructions. The right-hand column explains what their wording establishes.

Filled action readings
Fictional supplied noteFilled reading
Discuss removal of the permanent tooth identified in the plan. The action is removal. The category is permanent. The exact identity stays with the plan's supplied identifier.
Discuss interproximal reduction at the locations identified in the plan. The action has a different name. The locations must come from the supplied plan; the first sentence's tooth identifier cannot be carried across.

Carry the whole phrase into the next lesson

A faithful summary keeps the category, identifier and action together. If your note says only 'space needed', that is not yet an action description. If it names an action but gives no purpose, you have the action slot but not the goal slot.

The next chapter supplies that second connection. It shows how a stated purpose changes the reading of an action without asking you to select a treatment.
